Flat FootFlat feet is a very common problem and a flat foot should be treated. When your foot flattens out during walking, the bones are shifting out of proper position. The muscles that attach to the bones also shift out of proper position.

The muscles in your foot work very hard when walking and if the bones and muscles are out of position you can experience pain in the foot, ankle, knee and lower back. When your foot is out of position that causes your leg to shift out of position, which turn causes your knee, hip and back to be out of position.

In addition to the bone, muscle and joint pain a flat foot can cause, walking with a foot that flattens out can cause bunions, hammer toes, heel spurs and other problems with your foot.

Float Foot TreatmentThe first step in protecting your foot is proper shoes. Proper fitting shoes that are stable will help to support your foot. The next step is a device that placed into your shoe. This device is known as an orthotic. You can think of an orthotic as ‘eye glasses’ for your foot. The orthotic holds your foot in the proper position so that it does not flatten out when walking. This helps to keep the joints, bones and muscles in proper position and alignment.

If your foot is flattening out, it is wise to get orthotics even before you begin to experience pain in your foot. This will help to prevent many of the problems that are associated with flat feet. If you are already experiencing pain and discomfort or already have bunions, hammer toes or heel spurs then orthotics can help to minimize or completely eliminate the pain your having from these conditions.
